Education in Kolkata — The City of Joy's Intellectual Heritage
Kolkata has a centuries-old tradition of intellectual excellence — home to India's first modern university (Calcutta University, 1857), Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, and some of the subcontinent's oldest English-medium schools. The city's ICSE schools in particular carry a tradition of rigorous academics, outstanding English education, and cultural breadth. West Bengal Board schools serve the majority of the state's students at affordable fees.
