Getting the age wrong is the single most common reason an admission form is rejected. This is the complete age chart for school admission 2026-27 — minimum age, maximum age and the exact birth-date window for every class from Nursery to Class 12, based on the standard 31 March 2026 cut-off used by CBSE, CISCE and most state boards.
Age Chart 2026-27: Nursery to Class 1
Age is calculated as on 31 March 2026 for the session beginning April 2026.
| Class | Minimum Age | Date of Birth Between |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-Nursery / Playgroup | 2+ years | 1 Apr 2023 – 31 Mar 2024 |
| Nursery (Balvatika 1) | 3+ years | 1 Apr 2022 – 31 Mar 2023 |
| LKG (Balvatika 2) | 4+ years | 1 Apr 2021 – 31 Mar 2022 |
| UKG (Balvatika 3) | 5+ years | 1 Apr 2020 – 31 Mar 2021 |
| Class 1 | 6+ years | 1 Apr 2019 – 31 Mar 2020 |
Most schools also apply a maximum age one year above the minimum — so Nursery is 3 to 4 years, LKG 4 to 5, UKG 5 to 6 and Class 1 6 to 7.
Age Chart 2026-27: Class 2 to Class 12
| Class | Typical Age | Date of Birth Between |
|---|---|---|
| Class 2 | 7+ years | 1 Apr 2018 – 31 Mar 2019 |
| Class 3 | 8+ years | 1 Apr 2017 – 31 Mar 2018 |
| Class 4 | 9+ years | 1 Apr 2016 – 31 Mar 2017 |
| Class 5 | 10+ years | 1 Apr 2015 – 31 Mar 2016 |
| Class 6 | 11+ years | 1 Apr 2014 – 31 Mar 2015 |
| Class 7 | 12+ years | 1 Apr 2013 – 31 Mar 2014 |
| Class 8 | 13+ years | 1 Apr 2012 – 31 Mar 2013 |
| Class 9 | 14+ years | 1 Apr 2011 – 31 Mar 2012 |
| Class 10 | 15+ years | 1 Apr 2010 – 31 Mar 2011 |
| Class 11 | 16+ years | 1 Apr 2009 – 31 Mar 2010 |
| Class 12 | 17+ years | 1 Apr 2008 – 31 Mar 2009 |
From Class 2 upward, age matters far less. A student with a valid School Leaving Certificate and mark sheet from a recognised school is generally exempt from age-appropriate criteria when joining the next higher class — the previous class passed is what counts.
The Class 1 Rule: Why 6 Years Now
Under NEP 2020, India replaced the old 10+2 structure with a 5+3+3+4 framework. The first five years form the Foundational Stage, covering ages 3 to 8 — three years of pre-school (Nursery, LKG, UKG) followed by Classes 1 and 2.
Because the Foundational Stage assumes three years of pre-school before Class 1, the Ministry of Education has directed all states and Union Territories to set the minimum Class 1 age at 6 years. CBSE schools have applied this since the 2023-24 session, and it now extends to CISCE and state boards.
What this means in practice: a child who would once have entered Class 1 at 5 now spends an extra year in UKG. This is not a delay — it reflects evidence that formal literacy and numeracy instruction works better after a longer play-based foundation.
Important: Cut-Off Dates Are Not the Same Everywhere
The 31 March cut-off above is the most widely used, but several states use a different date, and a child eligible in one state may be ineligible in another on the same birthday:
- 31 March — Delhi, Telangana, West Bengal and most CBSE schools
- 1 April — Uttar Pradesh
- 1 June — Gujarat, Karnataka
- 31 July — Tamil Nadu
- 31 December — Maharashtra
If you are relocating, check the destination state's rule before assuming your child's year group carries over. Our companion guide covers this in detail — see the link at the end.
Age Relaxation: What Is and Isn't Allowed
- Up to one month — in Delhi, heads of schools may relax both the minimum and maximum age by up to 30 days. This is discretionary, not a right.
- 60 days in Karnataka — the state government eased the Class 1 age norm by 60 days for the 2026-27 session.
- Children with disabilities — most states allow relaxation on production of a valid disability certificate.
- Transfers with a valid SLC — students moving from a recognised school with a School Leaving Certificate are generally exempt from age criteria for the next class.
Outside these, there is no relaxation. A child who turns six a day after the cut-off is not eligible that year.
Documents You Will Need to Prove Age
- Birth certificate issued by a municipal corporation or registrar — the primary and usually only accepted proof
- Aadhaar card of the child, increasingly requested alongside
- Hospital discharge summary, accepted by some schools where a birth certificate is pending
- Transfer or School Leaving Certificate for Class 2 and above
Names and dates must match exactly across documents. A mismatch between the birth certificate and the Aadhaar card is a frequent cause of rejection and can take weeks to correct — check both well before forms open.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for Class 1 admission in 2026-27? Six years as on 31 March 2026 in most states, meaning a date of birth between 1 April 2019 and 31 March 2020.
My child turns 6 in May 2026. Can they join Class 1? Not under a 31 March cut-off — they would join UKG in 2026-27 and Class 1 in 2027-28. In Maharashtra, with its 31 December cut-off, the same child would be eligible.
What is the age for Nursery admission in 2026-27? Three years as on 31 March 2026 — born between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023.
Is the 6-year Class 1 rule compulsory? The Ministry of Education has directed all states and UTs to adopt it, and CBSE schools have applied it since 2023-24. Some states are still phasing it in, so confirm locally.
Can a school refuse admission only on age? Yes. Age eligibility is a threshold condition, and schools routinely reject forms that fall outside the window even by a day.
Does the age chart differ for CBSE, ICSE and IB schools? The minimum ages are broadly the same. What varies is the cut-off date each school applies, which usually follows the state it operates in.
Before You Apply
Work out your child's eligible class from the chart, confirm the cut-off date your state and board use, and get the birth certificate and Aadhaar matched. Then shortlist schools — not one, several, because entry-level seats are heavily oversubscribed.
