Sainik School Kazhakootam, under the Ministry of Defence, opened on 20 January 1962 in army barracks at Pangode before moving to its present campus near Thiruvananthapuram. The CBSE residential school takes cadets from Class VI to XII through AISSEE and has about 600 cadets. Girls have been admitted since 2021-22. Cadets live in eleven dormitories under housemasters and eat in a 600-seat dining hall. The campus has a 15-bed infirmary with a resident doctor, science and IT labs, an automated library, an Olympic-standard pool and eleven playing fields.
