The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) lets students complete Class 10 (Secondary) or Class 12 (Senior Secondary) at their own pace. It suits students in sports or the arts, those who need a second chance after a board exam, and learners who cannot attend school full time. Here is how NIOS admission works for 2026-27.

Is NIOS recognised?
Yes. NIOS is a national board under the Ministry of Education, and its Secondary and Senior Secondary certificates are accepted for higher studies and jobs like those of other boards. NIOS learners can also appear for exams such as JEE and NEET if they meet the subject requirements.
NIOS vs regular school
NIOS offers flexibility but less structure: there are no daily classes, so self-discipline matters. If your child needs flexibility but you still want a school community, also look at online schools in India.
