Why Mumbai Parents Choose ICSE Schools
Mumbai has always had a strong tradition of ICSE schooling, with institutions like Cathedral & John Connon, St. Mary's, and Villa Theresa setting the standard for decades. The ICSE board's emphasis on English language proficiency, analytical thinking, and a broader arts-science curriculum makes it particularly popular with Mumbai's cosmopolitan, internationally-minded families.
Today, Mumbai is home to hundreds of ICSE-affiliated schools spread across the island city, the western and eastern suburbs, Thane, and Navi Mumbai — covering everything from heritage institutions with century-old legacies to modern schools with world-class facilities.
ICSE vs CBSE in Mumbai — Which Should You Choose?
Mumbai has strong schools in both boards. A few considerations specific to Mumbai:
- If your child is likely to pursue humanities or creative fields, ICSE's stronger English and literature emphasis is an advantage.
- If your child is focused on engineering or medicine (JEE/NEET), CBSE has a slight edge in curriculum alignment.
- For families with international mobility in mind, ICSE is more recognised overseas than CBSE; IB is the gold standard for international recognition.
- Most Mumbai ICSE schools have smaller class sizes and more activity-based teaching compared to equivalent-tier CBSE schools.
